Isle of Skye
My first graphic novel attempt, and it was a hand-drawn one in 2024. Adapted by a real event.
A true story shared by a Chinese international student on social media, about encountering a person suffering from depression on a certain day:
There was a British native named Sam, who had lived in a small town in southern England since birth and was born into an extremely traditional Christian family. He always identified himself as a devout Christian. Sam had his own way of getting closer to God: since the age of twelve, he would take a train alone to a desolate place in the north of England called Sky Island. He would sit by a cliff there and gaze at the Atlantic Ocean all day long, finally returning on the island's sole public bus. He had persisted in doing this for over a decade, even as the bus driver changed several times. On that day, he felt that he and his God were together.
However, it seemed that devout Sam did not receive God's favor. During his university years, he suffered from depression. Initially, it was just mild depression due to stress, but as the days passed, his condition rapidly deteriorated into severe depression. After several years of attending support groups and receiving medication treatment, Sam, enduring immense physical and psychological pressure, wanted to put an end to his pain and life.
He felt abandoned by God and desired to commit suicide. However, his family hoped that before leaving, he would go to Sky Island once again and have a clear conversation with his deity.
As the time to bid farewell approached, his father pleaded with him: if that decades-long empty bus gained just one more passenger, he would promise to live for another year.
Initially, Sam didn’t take this somewhat absurd request seriously. On his 25th birthday, as he prepared for his final journey to bid farewell to his deity at Sky Island, while waiting for the empty bus on the return trip, a miracle happened...
The bus was packed with a group of Chinese tourists, reportedly because another bus filled with tourists had broken down on Sky Island that day. After the tour guide alerted the police, they coordinated the only bus available in the area to transport these tourists back.
Finally, this 'unlucky' Chinese international student tourist had to be transferred to this empty bus, but in doing so, unwittingly saved Sam's life.
